Negev Highland
From Mitzpe Ramon to Sde Boker Rough & Tough
The Negev highland is one of the most beautiful regions of Israel. Its unique geological past have made it rich with powerful forms of rocks, in various shades. The extreme conditions of the desert have made it rather arid, nevertheless some flora and fauna species managed to adapt themselves, include people who have learned the secrets of surviving in the wilderness since ancient times.
In this tour we will start from the town of Mitzpe Ramon, located on the top of the Makhtesh Ramon's cliff, we will ride along the cliff to the Machmal fortress, built at the 1-3rd century, guarding the Nabatean Incense Route. From there north, along the Nafcha heights, and down to tzin stream, one of the biggest dry streams of the Negev. we will visit the Shaviv fountain, a small oasis, not enough water for bathing, but great for relaxing under the big trees. The tour ends with a nice steep uphill section, up to Kibbutz Sde Boker.
Note: The tour runs mostly on rough rocky desert roads, include some rather steep up and downhill phases. It requires good physical conditions and solid MTB riding experience.
